This Page under construction .. information shown is from the 2007 Tour The Ten mile bike route will take you past what's new, what's old, and what's on the rise in Hartford, including the home of the Hispanic Health Council, the historic homes of Charter Oak Place, Community service groups like CSS/CON and Hartford 2000, New residential developments from historic buildings at the Colt redevelopment area, the famous Colt Park, future home of the Connecticut Botanical Gardens, the gem of a store that only sells Connecticut made products - the Connecticut Creative Store, and past the new buildings and renovations in the Hartford Hospital area. Gliding by the education masterpiece that is The Learning Corridor, it rolls past a picturesque view of Trinity College, by the spectacularly magnificent brand new Community Skating Rink (Trinity), and then to an unexpectedly beautiful and public place that is the Cedar Hill Cemetery. After a rest stop the Tour heads over to the large area of new homes along Brookfield Street. An entire area has reinvented itself, and even its name. Wheel past Prince Tech (Rebuilt), the Sunset Behind the Rocks Rising Star Block, past the Eastern Connecticut Resource Conservation and Development Team soon to be constructed trail, past the hoped for park and that will be the Park River Watershed's Bike and Walking Trail (south), past the home of Youth United for Survival a remarkable organization serving Hartford, past Pope Park and a major new development at the corner of Park and Laurel Streets, past the home of the Knox Parks Foundation with its greenhouses and farmer's market, and finally back to Bushnell Park via the State Library and the State Capital.
The 25 mile bike route starts from its junction with the ten mile route, passes through the vibrant Parkville retail area, to the doorstop of the Hartford Preservation Alliance, around the building to the busy and wonderful Real Artways, then spin past the up-from-the-ashes Hartford High (rebuilt), pedal past the famous and should be visited Harriet Beecher Stowe Center and the Mark Twain House, see the Hartford Seminary and its famous architecture, the historical complex that is the UCONN Law School, and up to Elizabeth Park and its beautiful gardens, new walkways, and a rest stop for all. Continuing on along the bike lane on Scarborough Street, home of some of the biggest homes in the City, past the little known but fascinating Menczer Museum of Medicine and Dentistry and the John Rogers African American Cultural Center on through the University of Hartford entrance, viewing the new magnet elementary school, and then within feet of the home of the fantastic community supporters at WWUH and Music for a Change, and curving back along the hoped for Park River Watershed Bike and Walking Trail (north), rolling through the residences in the Blue Hills neighborhood, we turn into the well appreciated, active, full of fields and forest Keney Park, then behind the famous Ebony Horsewomen, and over and by the newly built home of the Northeast Alternative Technology Marketplace that serves those with all forms of disabilities, viewing to our left the multipurpose Burgdorf Bank of America Health Center. Back to Tower Ave, we reenter the lovely landscape and picturesque golf course of Keney Park, on around the Tower on the Green Rising Star Block, to Riverside Park with its expanding recreational opportunities, along the newly completed Riverfront walkway, exiting the riverfront we pass the newly renovated Hartford Public library, and complete the tour passing the MDC headquarters. Note: The bicycle tour is limited to 4000 participants! Please register early to guarantee a spot.
This exciting and fascinating part of the Tour, provided by the Antiquarian and Landmarks Society, will take you from Bushnell Park to The Colt complex. The walking tour shows off 40 important historical and modern landmarks. In just two hours and a five-mile walk you will see and hear through this guided tour insights into Hartford's past present and future. Participants will be divided into small groups each with its own guide. List of Buildings/Houses on the Walking Tour The Antiquarian & Landmarks Society, Connecticut's statewide heritage organization, promotes interest in historic properties by preserving and interpreting significant personal stories and collections. The terminus of the walking tour is the Colt building complex where participants will be treated to a light reception and tour of this historic facility and the new living and working spaces being made of it. For those not wishing to walk back to Bushnell Park, a bus will be provided to return you to the park. Note: The walking tour is limited to 400 participants!
